Who is Dr. Raj Reddy?

Dr. Dabbala Rajagopal Reddy, more widely known as Dr. Raj Reddy, was born in 1937 in the small town of Andhra Pradesh, India. Young Reddy was always excited about the science and technology that filled the air of those times. His interest eventually paid off by leading himself to become one of the world’s great AI researchers.

This took him from India to the most leading institutions in the U.S., where he made groundbreaking contributions in AI. Throughout the years, Dr. Reddy has always been striving to develop AI systems which are able to understand and assist people on their daily lives through the human language.

Early Education and the Path to AI

Dr. Reddy undertook his first degree in India at the University of Madras. He then proceeded to Australia for his Master’s studies at the University of New South Wales.

However, the turning point came when he moved to the US to do his Ph.D. at Stanford University under John McCarthy, one of the persons who popularized AI—McCarthy being the first one to use the term Artificial Intelligence, a great influence over Dr. Reddy working under him.

That was when, in 1966, he got his Ph.D. in speech recognition — the machine that can, in technical terms, understand human language.

Breakthrough in Speech Recognition
